Is anyone out there using SketchUp 5.0 (http://www.sketchup.com/)? I am considering investing in the software for some three dimensional mapping applications, and am wondering if other CartoTalk participants have any experience with the program.

Any feedback, stories and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for the reply, Martin! Yes, I saw that "hand-rendered vs. SketchUp" session description in the announcement regarding the NACIS conference. It seems like a nice little program to do 3D work without having to earn your "PhD in AutoCAD". However, I was hoping to hear some "success stories" and/or "horror stories" (if any) before I decide to spend the $500 on a license, plus additional $$$ attending a training seminar or two.

I like your web site, by the way! I particularly enjoyed the South Boston map from your portfolio.

I saw a demo of it at the ESRI UC. Looks like an awesome program to use! I'm sure there's a slight learning curve, but the GUI looks really useful and intuitive. The tech who was giving the demo made a nice 3D model of a house (with different patterns and trim around the house) and imported it into ArcScene in about 10 mins. I have a demo CD but haven't installed it yet.

Sketch up is definitely higher on my list of softwares to learn now.

I have used it little bit and find it amazing. It is probably the easiest and most intuitive 3d software I have ever used.

Not only can export to Google Earth, but SketchUp and ESRI have developed a set of plug-ins/scripts so you can (for example) export building outlines out of ArcGIS into SketchUp, use SketchUp to extrude, model, drape and add other 3d objects, then export as a geodatabase back into ArcGIS. As if by magic all the elements maintain their coordinate space and snap back into position.

They have a great demo and lots of video tutorials.

okok, it's wicked cool. anyone else's head spinning from all software one needs to learn these days? photoshop, illustrator, gis, vertical mapper, google earth...
