Adventure Cycling Association (ACA) seeks a detail-oriented and enthusiastic staffer to develop and maintain a GIS-based cartography system for our bicycle route network and to help further our mission of inspiring people of all ages to travel by bicycle. We seek an individual who is excited by technology, has experience with GIS, and enjoys bicycling. The position is based in Adventure Cycling's headquarters in friendly and beautiful Missoula, MT.
Duties and responsibilities
The GIS Specialist will serve as the lead staff person to help ACA create and sustain the GIS component of our bicycle route mapping system. Key duties will include: installing and maintaining GIS hardware and software systems; serving as the technical resource person for ACA’s spatially enabled relational database management system; maintaining and administering ArcSDE; developing and managing ACA’s Geodatabases; assisting in the creation of cartographic products; educating ACA staff on use of geographic datasets and GIS software to access and edit data; and providing cartographic and report services and technical support for various projects. Other duties include: maintaining data-entry standards to ensure consistent quality in the spatial data; securing source data and verifying accuracy of data; generating custom queries and creating tools for processing and integrating data; securing GIS data layers as appropriate to ACA’s work; and developing and overseeing GPS collection efforts.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. The person will report directly to the Director of the Routes and Mapping Program.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
• 3-5 years professional experience in GIS
• Familiarity with ArcGIS 9.x
• Knowledge of cartography and experience in creating maps
• Experience with designing Geodatabases and managing spatial data layers
• Experience using geoprocessing techniques to convert data between formats, transform
data between spatial reference systems, and derive analysis products from data
• Familiarity with GPS use for mapping data collection
• Experience with instructing/training on technical subjects
• Some GIS programming experience with ArcObjects, Python, or any object-oriented programming language
• Excellent communication skills
• Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator
We need a self-motivated individual who is capable of researching methods and processes for implementing these technologies. Must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical users. Should have the ability to meet deadlines under pressure and work well with others for great outcomes. Keen pursuit of outdoor recreation, especially bicycling, a plus.
Education and experience
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering or Computer Science, plus at least three years of professional experience in GIS. Attention will be paid to candidates' bicycling experience and their ability to bring a cooperative spirit to the job and the workplace.
Compensation and workplace
The position will be competitively compensated in the Northern Rockies region. Benefits include paid time off for holidays, vacation and sick leave, an additional fully-paid one week bike vacation, full medical and dental coverage, life insurance, and retirement plan. We have a wonderful office in downtown Missoula, with a friendly and committed staff. The work will be performed in a normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
