hey there ppl,

I'm kinda workin on the cartography part for a Friend Finder LBS application. Just wanna know wat map layers would you reccomend that i display for this sorta application. I currently have various map layers with me but since its gonna be on a small display (as in mobile phones and PDA's), what should i put in and what should i leave out. Would really appreciate if i could get some feedback on this.

Some basic layers:
- roads
- important areas (parks, water)
- major landmarks

Just enough for mental navigation. Especially since you'll be working on a small screen, you have to keep it simple.

Thanks Hans...how bout labelling??....what layers do u think i should label??...and roughly wat scales would be the most appropriate??

For labels I'd echo Hans' recommendation on features: basics only. I am doing some work for Census maps on hand held devices, and the screen real estate is just too darn tiny for much to go on there. If you put more than a little amount, especially with the typical screen resolution, you are asking for trouble.

Like Andy says, minimal labels. Ideally, you'd want to label everything, but it's simply not an option on such a small screen.

On anything other than the most detailed zoom level, only label major features.

Take a look at JimBlakeslee's map of Bethesda for some ideas on dynamic labeling based on zoom level.
