According to getsafeonline. One only needs a birth date, Name, and address to get a credit card.

I have tried to remove my birth date from my profile without success... (in the process I screwed up a lot of other things regarding my profile).
I tried doing this after problems with my 'stolen identity' came about.

It seems to me that according to this article, Cartotalk 'could be' a haven for criminals.

I don't want to be alarmist but I was wondering what can be done by Cartotalk for those who believe in using their real name on a public forum. Or should I just call myself xxxcarto or something like that, and remove all things related to the real me.

Anyway I am looking forward to your replies.

Regards,

your profile says jan 1st 2006 now, so it seems like you succeeded?

Yes I finally realized that the two '--' did not change anything when entered as month and year. So I went for the 2006-01-01 birth date.

Jacques,
Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend anyone providing a real birth-date along with a name and address online. Seems like common sense to me. It’s akin to the old adage of ‘don’t accept candy from strangers…or late-night rides from a dude driving a beat-up old utility van with no-windows’ that’s just asking for trouble. The article makes a good point….we would never give out this type of info to a stranger on the street.

Woo hoo! I think I'm now the oldest member of Cartotalk - a nice ripe age of 99! I remember back in the gold old days when we made maps . . . .

... Would be nice to 'really' be able to choose our birth date.

Erin, you are correct it is foolish to give out that info. Maybe someone at Cartotalk can remove the birthday field for everyone... thus preventing people like me entering all the of the provided fields 'honestly'.

I had the opportunity to work and live in Newfoundland... there people don't locks their homes, most leave their car keys in the ignition (so they don't loose them) and invite strangers for dinner. Obviously, the web is not for Newfies ...

It should be possible to hide the birth date field in the profile, as well as the "these members have their birthday today" message on the main page, but I think only Nick can do that.

I guess there will be quite a few people listed as having their birthday on Jan. 1 this coming year (unless Nick removes that).

Isn't it traditional for horses and Queen Elizabeth to celebrate Jan.1 as their birthday (although, maybe celebrate isn't the right word to use when it comes to horses)? :)
