Does anyone know of an Illustrator plug-in that would give you the capability to draw a marquis around a small raster image of a text label (or a text label converted to outline) and use OCR to generate a comparable bit of editable text?

Why would you want to do this in Illustrator? - a vector drawing programme

Actually, I think this is a brillient idea. It's the kind of thing that very few of us will ever need, but those who do probably need it real bad. I'm not up on AI plugins so much anymore, but I haven't heard of anything that does this.
On the other hand, there are lots of stand-alone OCR applications that can be used to extract editable text from scanned text. Not that I've ever used any of them, nor do I have any idea how reliable or easy to use they are. But people do use OCR in production work, so while a two-step process would not be quite the elegant workflow that Larry envisions, it should be workable.

yup, sorry if I sounded a bit too harsh there - I didn't mean it at that, I was more asking for more input on the use-case scenario - but now I see that you mentioned outlines as well.

My thinking was that raster graphics would get into Illy somehow, and that it would probably be easy to OCR' them before they get into Illustrator.
