Hi guys I will be posting an updated resume within the next days showing my current level of experience. I have enjoyed freelancing when I get the projects & will continue to do so but because I average only one project every two months I am going to need to get a job.

I strongly want a GIS position due mostly to the experience, my interest in the thrill of displaying information from a table & calculating results, & the descent salary. So my problem is: word is not spreading about my operation so no one still knows who I am, my GIS experience is there but not up to the level it should be, five years out of college with only limited freelance experience.

I'm not sure what route I should take at this point, because I would hate the thought of getting something I don't care much for. However I'm thinking that the best route for me at this point should be more of a focus on the indirect approach to reach my goals. But my main question is for someone who has been fighting for five years to get into the field full time how do I get there?

Have you tried for government contract work? Check with your local employment agencies, they most likely staff for fed gov positions. You may end up working as a data monkey plugging numbers into a geodatabase, but it's a start!

Also, if you have worked any major contracts over the past few years, put them on your resume! It will show some relevant experience, and may help you get your foot in the door.

Cartography jobs are few and far between, but with your GIS knowledge, you should be able to find something.

I forgot a while ago to post my resume: (it's a PDF since I can not upload a Microsoft document)

Rate now I'm preparing a cover letter, & find that the nature of that beast seems to be always that writers block. The one I'm currently preparing is for two positions, a local CAD operator position & a temp position in Halifax asking for a Cartographer.
