Hi nspringer,

I noticed that you added a few more samples of your work at http://www.springercartographics.com - all of which are very impressive. This week I have been working on my first contour (elevation) map. I was wondering if you could provide insight into how you colored the contour map listed in your personal projects (Glacier Basin, Washington). Did you generate the color contours initiially in a program like Surfer and then recolor in Illustrator? Thanks. PLP

In almost all my maps I start with basic geographic data in ArcView and then export basic shapes to Adobe Illustrator format. I don't bother adding any style to the data in ArcView since that's what Illustrator is for. ArcView 8 exports each theme as a separate layer in Illustrator.

I often use Adobe Photoshop to create backgrounds like the hill shading in Glacier Basin, which was created from a DEM (the technique is too extensive to go into here but there are articles online like: http://www.reliefshading.com/ and http://www.shadedrelief.com/).
