Hi All -

This may have already been covered before. My apologies if it has.

When opening an existing file not previously opened on your system, both Freehand and CorelDraw have the feature that asks the user which font(s) they would like to substitute for fonts that are missing. Illustrator notifies the user that fonts are missing and have been subsituted but doesn't give the user the option of specifying which fonts should be used. Instead, once the file is opened, the user must search for the text with the missing fonts and change the fonts manually.

Does anyone know if Illustrator has a font substitution list that can be modified before a file is opened? If not, is there an easier way of tracking down the text (other than the highlight feature) and substituting the desired fonts in than doing in manually or by layer?

It can't be specified before opening, but it's fairly easy to do this once the file has been openend:
  • Open the file, Illustrator will warn you there are missing fonts
  • Unlock all layers containing text objects
  • Go to Type - Search Font
  • The top list shows all fonts found in the document. Missing fonts show up with an asteriks
  • Select a missing font in the top list, then select a replacement font in the bottom list (make sure the bottom list is set to "system"), then click "Replace All"
  • Repeat for all missing fonts
Hope this helps.
