Currently I am a cartographer for the US Census Bureau. You won't have seen any of my maps unless you were an enumerator for the last census in 2000 or are the BAS respondent for a local government (if you don't know what that means, you don't really want to). My branch is responsible for the "data collection" maps, and there is another branch responsible for the "data dissemination" maps. For the last census we produced 15-20 million maps. As you can imagine, our mapping system is highly automated. I did not see most of the maps I was responsible for; just the problem maps. Even with a problem rate under 1% that adds up to a lot of maps to fix.
My background includes a short stint with the USGS (at their research station on Cape Cod), MA from University of Oregon (go Ducks!
) in Geography, and BA from UC Santa Cruz (go Slugs!
) in Fine Art. I'm also semi-active in NACIS (if anybody is going to the meeting in Salt Lake City this October maybe I'll see you there). Thanks,
Andy McIntire
