Hi all,

My name is Wesley and I am from Durban South Africa. I have an MSc in Environmental Science specialising in Remote Sensing and a bit of GIS. I found your site and had a look at the map gallery, was realy impressed. You guys seem to take cartography and merge it with graphic design to produce awsome maps. My own maps are nothing like the ones posted here so I would like to join you guys and improve my map making and cartography skills.

I am currently working in ArcMap 9.2 (ArcInfo) and find that it does the job (with some encouragement). I am, however, interested in open source cartography tools and would like to improve my skills using these tools. Also having not been trained as a cartographer I look forward to learning and interacting with other members of this site.

Hi Wes, and welcome to Cartotalk.

As for the merging of cartography and graphic design, I think that's one of the things that allows many folks here to produce absolutely stunning maps.

If you want to learn how to produce maps like that, I can only advise you to try out as much as you can and ask as much as you can.
