I finally had a chance to see the new Gary Hustwit Helvetica documentary last night. Has anyone else seen this? Any opinions? I recommend it. Very well done both esthetically and content wise although you can't encapsulate the entire design world in such a short film it does a good job of emphasizing the omnipresence of Helvetica. A great soundtrack as well so...

The trailers and clips on the official film web site didn;t work for me, but the Youtube version did worked. Looks like fun.

I tried, but the showtimes that I could make were all sold out. It'll be back to Chicago in October, I was told.
Same here, I finally got to see it on my fourth try when they added a second showing at Silverdocs here...even then that sold out as well. It comes out on DVD in Sept or October I'm told.

I saw a movie yesterday, Helvetica (www.helveticafilm.com), and I highly recommend it. It featured many stars of typgraphic design like Erik Spiekermann and Hermann Zapf, very articulate graphic designers like Massimo Vignelli, and some really funny visual and verbal puns about the font everyone loves or loves to hate. The film maker sets up a really good discussion about it. Lots of fun.

Wow, that sounds great. fontography has really started going mainstream if they're making documentaries.
A couple years ago, a nearby (Arvada, Colorado) community arts center had Chank Diesel out to talk about his fonts and business. That was pretty cool to see fonts as worthy of exhibition.

What an amazing piece. As a casual typography enthusiast, I'd never considered the downsides to Helvetica. Getting perspective on both sides makes me appreciate the history of the font that much more.
The film is masterfully shot and edited, and there are some real personalities -- Spiekermann, the guy with the lisp, and H&FJ. For the uninterested it's probably 15-30 minutes too long, but the beginning is entertaining even for the design-uninclined.
