My office is close to the university, and when I boarded the bus, I overheard two women (one younger, likely a student, and one older) discuss a map project that the younger woman was working on...

young girl: I have been taking physical geography classes, and there they said that a map is not a map without a north arrow and a scalebar

then she went into a long tale about how she was downloading city maps from the planner's office, and then cutting and pasting them, and making sure that there was a correct scalebar and north arrow on each map that she was preparing for her project, and that for some cases that the north arrow was bigger than some other important features, and that it looked odd, but the map had a north arrow!
