As many of you read, I started an effort to create a new blog about maps and mapping.

The new site, www.CartoBlog.com, has been live for a few weeks now, but we wanted to hold off on the announcement until there was a little bit to read first.

Contributors include CartoTalk members John Krygier, Jean-Louis Rheault, Derek Tonn, Ben Bakelaar, and Michael Page.

The blog concept is based on the site Design Observer. The audience is both cartographers and map fans. John Krygier summed it up best in an email recently:

The main postings at Design Observer seem to be sparked by a news
item, something interesting read or seen, or some issue confronted
by one of the authors in their work. But then they push the issue
further, provide some kind of insight from the author's perspective,
something beyond the news, the item, or the experience.

The key is that we all have insider insights and understanding and
we think about map related stuff because we are engaged with maps
on a regular basis, not just as a hobby. That is what will
distinguish us from the Map Room and other blogs.

Also: we are all going to have different insights we can provide;
people who produce maps on a daily basis vs teaching about maps vs
map research, etc., and that diversity will be good.

We are still trying to get a more regular flow of postings, but that will come in time.

Enjoy.

Well, it's certainly looking very interesting and I'll add it to my daily browsing list.
