I am re-creating a map and would like to produce a relief nearly identical to the one below.
My question is: what method do you think this relief was created with? manual/airbrushed or dem filter/hillshade/photoshop finishing?
There are a few places on this relief where it looks like a white pen was used to scrape away at the surface (image 2).

My attempts using world GTPO30 has come close, but not to the extent of super generalizing these landforms.

Just a wild guest.... Photoshop... with airbrush effects...and editing
or manual airbrush painting ?.... Both seem possible.

You probably would need to know the step by step procedures used by the original author...

As I suspected. The images are from a National Geo map of New Zealand.

Does anyone have any contacts with NG cartographers or good methodology papers on small scale hillshade creation (detailed methods using current apps)?

My suggestion would be: decrease the resolution of the dem and try using some Patterson tricks. But of course I am not one of the big experts here.

I worked with an Cartographer-Artist that produced the shaded relief for the 250k JOG (Joint Operation Graphics) charts (over 20 years ago). Before he did it with pencils.

His work was amazing.

...off hand I would think you need a lot of patience (and paper) and an artistic touch. A tutor would be nice. I would be interested in knowing how many shaded relief artist are left out there working.

Anyway airbrush shaded relief is a trade of its own.

Did I mention its a Wacom digital pen? lol
Still, I have a lot of learning to do and do not plan on incorporating the pen into projects anytime soon. Well, unless I turn out to be a born natural with the thing, which I highly doubt!
