Well Dave that's a great point, by the time I started frequenting bookstores (still at an early age) Border's was already in the process of sweeping the nation! I remember reading some articles about it (and, seriously, I must have been like 8 yrs old at the time)... and of course we've all seen that Tom Hanks movie about the indy bookstore vs. the chain.

If Jean-Louis had said independent bookstores, I wouldn't have been surprised, but specifically "occult" bookstores.. kinda threw me :)

Good point. You also made me notice that there was a meaning shift in the word 'Occult'. I think it now gives the impression of something satanic and witches gathered around inverted pentagrams.. Some of these bookstores catered to things like Vegeterianism and Yoga. The term I should have used was 'New Age' boostore.

Good observation also that this was the pre-walmart era where most businesses were not chains.
