I am trying to compile a comprehensive (but not to the point of arcane) list of map specifications for major topographic map series in Canada, Europe and the UK. I have an interest in map series in the rest of the world, but this is the focus for now.
For each series of maps, I would like to know the scale, units, contour interval, and grid tic interval.
...anyone have any pointers on where to look?
The info will be used in the design of map reading/plotting tools.

Set up a standard questionnaire and ask selected people to participate. I'd be more than happy to give you the details for the Dutch 1:25.000, 50.000 and 250.000 scale maps.

For the United Kingdom, see if you can find JB Harley's ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS: A DESCRIPTIVE MANUAL. It has pretty much all you need and a lot more. Great Book.
Are you going to put the resulting collected info out anywhere, and if so, may I recommend wikipedia. Just the sort of thing ought to be out there...
