I ski the American Birkebeiner every February(the largest nordic skiing event in the United States), and just saw this weblink in a Birkie newsletter I receive-
http://mywebspace.wi...Birkebeiner.swf
A really nice map product which does an excellent job of showing just what the Birkie is.

That's pretty intriguing. It took me a bit to figure out how to make things move, and once things started moving it took me a bit to figure out the purpose of the map (aside from the coolness).
Ostensibly, it's to aid in the understanding (and comparison) of a race entrants starting in waves?

Is the segmented (rather than curving) trail a limitation of Flash or of the GIS used to create the basemap?

that's from the data and not flash. would have been nice is they took the time to smooth it out. otherwise, pretty slick.

Wouldn't an elevation/profile be very useful for prospective skiiers?

Now thats an efficient graphic.
frax - I am planning making a Norway-Sweden-Denmark trip next year and on my short list of things to do is ice skating in Sweden. Do you know the name of the area of connecting frozen lakes popular with ice skaters? Hopefully there is also a decent map of this area too.

You mean for long-distance skating (cross-country skating)? There is not one place, but there are lakes that are good for that all around the V?ster?s/Stockholm/Uppsala area. The Stockholm archipelago is really good too.
The problem with the skating is the weather - you can't do it if there is too much snow, and the ice needs to be strong enough (of course). I don't think this season has been very good yet, for instance.
There is one big race/event which runs between Uppsala and Stockholm (although they have had to cancel it several years, or do an alternative route) - Vikingar?nnet.

Ah yes! Much thanks indeed - that's what I have in mind.
hmmm...the Swedish Vasaloppet map sorta looks like a Santa route map!

Hmm... I see that Vikingarennet doesn't have a map... that is kind of bad! It seems like that skating event is coming up soon!
