Hi, my name is Hugo,
And I am new here!

I currently work for the UN Environment Programme, I started off with GIS, but have done the whole works in the last five years here, and moving more and more into thematic cartography (GIS assisted). I have also done a stint of web application programming as well.

Another big thing I have been working on is a special kind of cartography -- of the interactive kind -- preparing, programming and designing ArcIMS services.

I am in the middle of a big project now on the Arctic, preparing a set of maps, and I am evaluating MAPublisher (not overly impressed so far...)

Oh, and I am a map geek. Not that I try to collect or anything, but I love maps, and I have read a few books as well.

In my toolbox:
* Illustrator
* ArcGIS 9 (do a fair bit of work in workstation still, but prepare map layouts in ArcMap and export to .ai)
* ArcSDE (have a huge data library in the sde)
* A TRUST tablet (don't use it that much)
* At the office I have a reasonably powerful Wintel machine
* On the road (and for some work) I have a small Acer tablet PC. Good for most things, but quite underpowered for heavy GIS/Illustrator things. But having a Wacom tablet in the screen is kinda cool (traced an image for a map yesterday).

I didn't see the post, but I assume it is the remote sensing coffee table book one, then no. That was my colleagues in Sioux Falls that did most of the work there (I actually don't know much about it, and I haven't seen it). I just no that it has gotten a huge amount of press and attention, and that it is doing very well in sales.

My latest baby (launched in February) is not doing as well in the sales...

Thanks, actually the web images are not as good in color, the .pdf on that web-site should be fine though (a colleague of mine are, as always, doing a good job with the layout).

I prepared about 50% of the maps for the VAG publication, a colleague of mine did the rest (he is kind of the head cartographer for my office, and also for le mond diplomatique).

Nice work. I really like the graduated symbol maps in chapter 2...very informative. I hope your sales improve Great website design as well...

Hello Welcome to the forum!

My two EuroCents,

graduated symbosl: the data is classified and is represented by distinctly sized symbols; works for ordinal, interval and real scaled data.

proportional symbols: the data is directly translated into symbol size (common with most population maps, for e.g. your Arctic Pop Map in Chapter two); works for real scaled data.
