In Illustrator CS2, I'm trying to color type boxes in a multiple selection. It always wants to fill the entire bounding box of each box rather than just the type outline. In the past, this has worked properly, so I don't know why it won't now. :(

First make sure you are working with area type (type constrained by a box), and not point type (easiest is way to check is to reshape the bounding box, and see if text gets deformed - if it does, it is point type).

From there on you have to work with appearances, here is a tutorial...

I have a feeling this is what you are after...

It seems that indeed this is area text I'm working with, and the Appearance palette will change a single piece of type. When I multiple-select though, the Contents line disappears and all I can do is change the bounding box area (as before). This type started it's life as FreeHand text, so maybe there's some problem with that.

Thanks for the tip - at least I know more what the Appearance palette does!

Francis,

This might not solve your problem however...it might explain the 'content' issue.

The content appears in the in Appearance menu when you select the entire layer (double circle around the layer). In this case the appearance is set for the entire layer. If you select all items in the layer, either with the 'shift select' , with the 'object all on same layer' or with the markee tool the content item should not appear in the appearance menu (no double circle around the layer). In this case the appearance is set individually to each object on that layer.
This assumes that there are no groups on your layer

as for your problem.... check using the direct selection tool (white marquee) if your text's bounding box is set to no fill and no stroke. Maybe Freehand imports with a white fill, thus when you change your fill it is applied to the bounding box.

Thanks for the 'Content' explanation. I can change the type color but only individually by selecting the type with the 'T' tool. So something in each type box must be set somehow in FreeHand, as you said.

I'm enjoying working with Illustrator more now that I am becoming familiar with it. There are still some weirdnesses in the GUI and design of the program that differ from the exalted Freehand of old, but I've improved the workflow by changing some of CS2's keyboard shortcuts to match Freehand (and since I'm still doing stuff in Freehand, changing a few few shortcuts there to match Illustrator). When either program can't handle the assignments, I use Quickeys. Now that ArcGIS 9.2 is out and has much better keyboard shortcuts, I'm going to fool with those to see if I can get them to line up with Illustrator/Freehand. B) (need to update the PC Quickeys tho')
