I tell people I make maps because I get lost so easily.

GIS: I like to say GIS is to a map as a database is to a phone directory. Over-simplified, but it works for most people.

I think I'll stick to the gem that Han's mentioned.

"I'm a cartographer - I take pictures of cars."

When I first started making maps I called my company Tom Harrison Cartography. I got so tired of explaining what cartography meant that I finally changed the name to Tom Harrison Maps and when people ask what I do I tell them I publish maps. Usually the first thing they ask me is either "Do you fly in an airplane and take photos?" or " Do you use those satellite photos?". I just say No, I hike the trails and that starts another conversation.

The problem is that I'm into photography as well and quite often people see me with an impressive-looking camera in my hands... ;)

We used to have a photo gallery too, before the crash. I guess we can make a photography thread in the off-topic area if anybody is interested in sharing their photos. I know we have a couple of talented photographers in here...

rumors say that CartoMike is a semi-professional car-o-grapher - that he has been seen with a cheap disposable camera taking photos of RVs or something like that... ?

Nice paint job. Not much of a shine on the finish. Is that what you wanted or is this work in progress?

I wish...

Spotted this one last September at the Oyster Run in Anacortes, WA. Thousands of bikes around and I had to take a photo of a car... hardcore cartography ;)
