I got some excellent data from the Energy Information Administration, which is the group who is responsible for collecting energy statistics for the U.S. Government. They certainly have national level data, and in many cases subnational data--they would also have contacts who may be able to provide more detailed information than what they publish on their website: www.eia.doe.gov
