for me it would depend on the implementation

I agree completely. In my mind, the chat room isn't meant to *replace* anything, just offer another (more real-time) option for interaction.

What I mean, I wouldn't be so keen on any web-based solution, but I might try an IRC thing (it doesn't need to be official or anything - just say drop in at #CartoTalk on EfNet or something).
Why do we need a poll in first place? Why not go ahead with the above?

This poll thread was actually a response to this thread: http://www.cartotalk...?showtopic=1477 but I guess Invision automatically breaks polls out to their own thread.
As for IRC, not a bad idea... for me, it's just the convenience of not needing an IRC client.

This client can be integrated directly into Invision Power Board.

I have it on one of my sites, but it doesn't get used all that much. Nonetheless, it was free!

I'd prefer that we didn't have such a facility, as it would tend to exclude people who are not logged in at the time - the fact that the full conversation history is preserved for later browsing is a big plus point of the current forum system.

Well said. The strength of forums such as CartoTalk isn't just in dialogue, but as a demonstration of what cartography is all about. Its a great way for students, newbies, graphic designers, etc, to learn more about the art we practice. By forcing members to participate in a manner that is recorded and catalogued, as an industry we are capable of a much greater reach.
Now, if you find a chat module which could record conversations and make them available within the forums, that would be great. Google Chat, I think, has such a feature in relation to Gmail.

The results of my unscientific poll:
13 no's
17 not no's
To respond to the last post, that demonstration of what cartography is all about is created by the interaction on the message board, whether or not it is recorded. People use private messages, email each other, and continue conversations that started in the board offline.
