I exported the s_14jl05 Census shapefile of the United States to AI format, and now am trying to simplify Alaska's coast. The main polygon has 5104 points, and I have it selected and am trying to use Path -> Simplify to reduce the points. But no matter what settings I use in the dialog box, the points never change. I can't figure out why? Is it because the polygon is a "compound path" that has been exported from ArcGIS?

[EDIT: Oops It's because I had the Direct Selection Tool still activated, rather than the Selection Tool which puts the bounding box around the polygon.

I would just delete this thread, but I know I'm going to end up having more questions, so I may as well just leave this open.]
