I have several NOAA marine charts in BSB format (.BSB & .KAP file extensions) that I would like to open in Photoshop on my Mac. I don?t actually need them to open as a geo-referenced file, I just want to view, edit and print them.

I?m on a Mac and use Photoshop CS2. I have found a Photoshop plugin for PC?s that allows it to read BSB?s but nothing for the Mac.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Do not know about that format, but have used NOAA ge0-tiffs before which are readily available on net.

Can you point to a specific file? It could be tricky since the BSB/KAP seems to be a mixture of vector and raster.

BSB alone is a basic binary format for raster.

The BSB files are strictly raster. NOAA refers to them as NOAA RNC's - raster nautical charts, but the format is BSB. I think KAP may be a supplimental file that is created when the BSB is expanded.

You can access files here:http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/download.htm

The software link you provided is the Photoshop plugin I mentioned and is not for Mac versions of Photoshop. I can't seem to find any sites with geotiff nautical charts of the SF bay area.

Here's a BSB viewer for a Mac, but I guess that still won't get it into Photoshop for you....

Thanks chubbers, I actually have MacGPS Pro. It's a good program and allows me to view the .BSB files and use them for route planning, waypoint creations etc., but it does not allow printing, or exporting as a printable file (except for screen shots).

Hello,

You can use GraphicConverter :
Graphic Converter for MacOSX
which allows you to import BSB (.kap) charts.

For info, we have released an application for MacOSX 10.4 to convert raster (scanned) charts into BSB (.kap) format, entering 4 georeferenced points upon the chart.
RasterChart2BSB

Cheers.

Peio, that works, thanks! The Graphic Converter web site does not list .KAP as a file format it can open, but it works none the less.
