Some of you might have use for Natural Earth, a raster base map of the world made from public domain data and featuring merged landcover and shaded relief at 1.24 km resolution:

Besides the large data files suitable for making custom maps, the website contains a gallery of interesting landscapes from around the world and a downloadable poster-sized wall map. Please help yourselves.
