Several days ago I walked past a home-less gentlemen on the street who was wearing this incredible "map jacket". I was tempted to take his picture but didnt out of courtesy. I kinda wish I would have now.

I can't find pictures anywhere, but does anyone else remember the amazing period dress reproductions made entirely of maps that used to grace the map reading room at Library of Congress? I think Barbara Adele Fine made them, but I'm not certain and I can find nothing by googling...

Although I have not seen them on this side ( N.Am.) of the Atlantic, All the map shops I visited in Austria last week had a wide variety of city map themed courrier bags. Had they not been so cheaply made I would of gotten a NYC version. Anyways they had them for all the major European cities and a NYC version. Anyone else seen these?

The dresses apparently were mentioend in The Portolan (Washington Map Society Journal), issue 32 (1995), referenced on-line in the journal's index under Maps, Used to Dress Life-Sized Mannequins.

That's all I've found on line. Anyone have that issue?

I'll look out for this trend here in Italy - they love driving, so I wouldn't be surprised to see guys wearing a jacket covered with a map from the Toruing Club of Italy.

So how do the women accessorize with the dresses? Do saphire earings go nicely with glacial blue?

I'm FINALLY posting these (sorry for the delay Nat!)
As the signs state, these were created by Barbara Fine and donated to the Library in 1994.
They've held up pretty well, I know that Barbara has done some maintenance and repairs a year or two ago.
