I am hoping for some direction. I am a graphic artist/color specialist for work and a visual artist for fun. That being said, I'm looking to get a really nice book about historic maps leaning towards the ones heavy with images and color.
I'm new to maps but they always captured my interest. I really love the artwork found on really old maps. I'm probably just not aware of a whole study that caters to this artwork and am hoping to start with the most widely recognized but also with anything strange.
I hope that makes sense. I am not concerned with money and understand most top quality art books are not cheap. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Not a book, but an online gallery... lots of old maps, but as I recall, most of them appeared "washed out", so maybe not what you are looking for.

Also I believe Univ. of Texas maintains a somewhat large online map gallery. NY Public Library also.
