This seems to be the same data as GNIS. I have some very serious doubts about the reliability of this data. I checked my part of The Netherlands and it lists many huge cities that I have never heard of. I don't know how good it is for other countries, but based on this small sample I would not recommend using this.

It is definitely hit or miss and unedited data.

Better try the NIMA (CIA) Gazetteer. The PPLs (Populated Places) are Georeferenced good enough to drape them over remote sensing data or aerial photos. You can easyly import the data into Intergraph or ESRI Software.
It discriminates between native (endonym) and variant (exonym) names (toponyms).
Although the non PPLs aren“t covered nearly half as good as the PPLs.
