Since the overall map look is on the dark side, what about light colored type with a dark outline? (I'm not suggesting yellow as in the example below - just to illustrate)

How about making the font and style more like the other geological features on the map, like the Enylchek Glacier?

Here are a couple of different approaches. I like Nick's idea of using a brighter color with a dark outline. I prefer number 1 out of the colors i came up with. Erin

I think for the places, countries, and mountain names it could be subtler using white, but you may need to be more agressive with the outlines.
