I know NACIS has a yearly student map competition, but does anyone do anything for professionals?

DMTI Spatial in Canada has a map competition for users of their data. It is run during their annual Open House in Markham, near Toronto. I don't think you need to be a professional to enter. I think they would take entries from any users of their data. Last year, there were 2 prizes, one for Peoples Choice - voted by those who attended the Open House and employees of DMTI, and the President's Choice - chosen by the President of DMTI Spatial. My map won the President's Choice award last year.

To enter this competition - should the map be visually good or technically good or both ?

The ACSM-CaGIS competition is probably the most prestigious in the U.S., on its 33rd year. The entries are always very impressive, although sometimes I might have picked a different winner (but then, that's the nature of cartography). The toughest thing is beating National Geographic, which usually wins at least two categories a year. They are having a big museum display on the history of the competition and showing many of the winners in the Library of Congress starting this summer.

I think Pat Dunlavey and Dave Imus' Alaska map should of done much better this year in both the Avenza and the ACSM comp.
Given the resources that NG has its nice to see so many NACIS members amongst the ACSM winners this year, as they are mostly much smaller operations.
Do you know the dates the LC show will be up?

That's a great idea...and one that's been thrown around in past discussions. I'm guessing it's going to happen sooner or later, especially now that the forum membership has grown. It would be a shame not to do something like that. The amount of talent represented at cartotalk alone justs blows me away. Awards are certainly in order...Erinhere's an idea...the 2006 Cartotalk.com awards.

I have been mulling this over as well. I am actually just trying to work out some details in my mind about format and logistics.
Probably toward the end of the year so it can be for any maps created in 2005.

i'll be at UC this year (first time ever), so i'll try to take some pics at the Map Gallery.
most of the maps being displayed will be published in the ESRI Map Book in the near future.
a few of my friends have had honorable mentions in the cagis awards.

I have been to three UC:s -- the map gallery is VAST and a huge chunk of the maps are not so interesting from an estethic perspective.
One of our maps, from a poster last year, got into this year's map book -- the funny thing though is that no ESRI software were used in producing the map...
