Well, it took me some hacking, but here's something I whipped up with the Google Maps API today:

Link removed, check the member map (top right)

At the moment, it's being fed from a static xml file. Hopefully it's also possible to read the lat/lons directly out of the database.

If you're not on the map, or in the wrong location, contact me and I'll make sure you're added.

I will work with Hans to integrate this into the site, so make sure your Lat/Long is in your profile and then you can be on the map.

Just a general reminder on the lat/lons in your profile:

- please make sure you enter it in decimal degrees
- please use negative values for west and south

We'll be working on a page that will dynamically feed the map from the database, rather than manually entering everything into an xml file.

Hans,

My hat's off to you! Great job. Looks like I'll need to update my postion though. It's only a few miles off, but gee'z you'd think in this line of work I could have gotten that right. :o

I have now hooked up the map to the database and linked it from the toolbar at the top. Look for the "Member Map" link above.

Thanks to Hans for his help with the code.

Unfortunately I am still working out some issues with Safari so you will have to use IE or FireFox for now.

If you pin is in the wrong location, edit your member profile and it will be updated.

In the future I want to add a location picker from the profile screen.

Using Safari 2.0 in OS X 10.4.1 the map works great. I also tried with 1.3 on 10.3.9 and it seemed OK.

I have to admit though, seeing you guys working this out makes me feel feeble and wholly inadequate.

I'll just go back to scribbling in Illustrator.

Nick,

Looks great. I especially like the custom pushpin image.

That's weird. I'm using Safari 1.3 on OS X 10.3.9 as well.

typical, you enjoy our fine baked beans and Red Socks, submit maps in our carotgraphic delegation, yet deny the US flag. Someone call the INS!

ps-If Martin gets his flag, I would like to request the skull and crossbones.

Unfortunately, until some country adopts the skull and crossbone as it's flag, the list doesn't support it. You can however pick any other country flag more to your liking in your profile :D

Wow, it's lonely in the mid-west and western U.S. (no push-pins, save for one)! Apparently cartographers like to be within a reasonable driving distance to the ocean.

Claude, I'll be joining you in the Denver area (Boulder) in the next week. I second you on the adoption of the skull and crossbones! Nice work on the map Nick and Hans! Cheers. Erin
