Hi NACIS -

Been a while since I've posted here, and a few years since I've been at a NACIS meeting. This post is for those who remember my personal research that led me to doing a medium scale historical GIS of a fair bit of Colonial America. My ultimate goal was to research and write a book about one of my ancestors who, as it turned out served as an officer in the Continental Army from day one until the end of the war, who survived several major battles and skirmishes.

I turns out I had enough material for four books, and the first one is now available.  It is called, The War has Begunand is written as historical fiction to appeal to a broader audience. The people and events are fully documented (sources for everything I used are included in the back of the book).  I self-published the book via CreateSpace.com. I still cannot believe it cost nothing to publish. That said, I hired an editor--it would be crazy to publish a novel without an editor.

There are seven maps (five excerpted from the large colonial GIS, one excerpted from my Battle of Bunker Hill map, and the other is a reconstruction of the town of Wilton, NH in 1775), you can preview them on the Amazon site, and access higher resolution color editions in the gallery of my website.

I think of it as a novel made possible by GIS and cartography.

Enjoy!

Charlie

PS - I am happy to sign books when- and wherever you find me.
