Take a look at Terrain Sculptor: http://terraincartog...errainsculptor/ it produces generalized terrain shadows like you'd see in small scale terrain maps.
There are also some good techniques in here: http://www.shadedrel...relieftuto.html

hello, thank you very much for your answers, I have tried many times with Terraisculprot but it seems that does not work:" an error occurred while rendering the map. java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap Space
I use terrainsculprot 2.1 , Windows 10 64 bit and java 8 on a new PC.

There is a limit to how large the incoming file can be for Terrain Sculptor. Don't try to use this on your full resolution DEM. Downsample the DEM until Terrain Sculptor will open it, filter the terrain, save as a new DEM and render new filtered terrain (or save directly to a filtered terrain image), overlay your detailed terrain in Photo Shop or similar and use a multiply filter to blend the shadows.
Other options are to follow the Patterson tutorials on using a mixture of full sample and down-sampled terrains or full height and reduced height (z value) terrains in your regular GIS software to create a variety of shadowed surfaces to blend into a nice looking terrain.

terrainsculptor is fantastic! I had installed the 32bit version of java, it is for this reason that before it gave me a memory error. (I have noticed that even with 64-bit operating system by default java install me 32bit. Now with Java64 ,downloaded and manually installed, I no longer problem . With the same DEM I can process it smoothly. This software really does a nice job
