thanks for the printing explanation, Hugh.  Interesting stuff. 

 

As for potentially confusing a map reader in to thinking the lines are bathymetry... I can understand the concern here, which leads me to agree that there are maps where these waterlines would be inappropriate.  However, in other cases I think it adds a nice effect and as others suggested, it can improve the contrast where there is much water and land interface.  I don't typically look for bathymetry on a map unless there is a specific subject, like navigation or natural phenomena, that would relate to it. That's not to say that bathymetry can't also be a nice touch....
