A client of mine wanted some country maps with country boundaries but with one condition that these maps should be editable in Powerpoint itself without using any third party image editing software and preferably should be vector freeforms, so that color / pattern fill and blowing up can be done without pixelating the map image.
So I designed the maps for him by exporting as Windows Meta File and then importing it in Powerpoint. The file can also be exported as Enhanced Meta file format. Now the beauty of this format is that it preserves the vector freeforms in the slide and then it can be very easily manipulated in the Powerpoint itself to suit to your theme requirement. You want to show some data analysis without the use of GIS etc for a county wise data of a state or you want to show some state data for the US and do not want to use elaborate GIS techniques, then just use these simple freeform boundary maps to make engaging presentations.
Another functionality added to these presentation slides is the layering concept. The State Boundary, the County Boundary and the names slides, all are aligned accurately to match perfectly. So you want to show just one county in the whole of state, just select and delete the rest. Or you want to name only one county, delete the balance names and keep only one. The combinations with just three slides are so many that hundreds of different maps can be created without losing out on the accuracy or pixelation of boundary lines as they are all vector freeforms.
I do agree it is not useful for representing complex analysis but how many times you need to show very complex analysis especially in very routine and mundane matters. And an editable presentation map resource with a company executive can be so very handy.
