Lots of kitty litter, and that's a very subtle hint...
I was looking in South America....
Looks like northern Egypt, west of the Nile Delta. Was kitty litter partly a reference to the Great Sphinx? That with Matthew's North Africa comment led me that direction.
Still not sure what the landscape is, or why it's important. So maybe there's more detail that someone can drum up for a better answer.

I'm going to accept Tangnar's answer, it's close enough and I hadn't even though of the Sphinx so bonus points for being clever The area is indeed west of the Nile Delta, quite a ways west, it's the Qattara Depression, one of the lowest points on earth and, during WW2, an impassable obstacle for tanks.
My guess would be White Sands National Monument, NM.
