The town is on an island. They share the same name.

Another hint: the people that live here speak a Slavic language.

Hi Hans,

You got it!. Hvar, Croatia, is the gorgeous site for the ICA Mountain Cartography Workshop in late May, 2018. Check it out:

I don't think I'd have much to add to a mountain cartography workshop, but the locations you're meeting at are top notch!

Anyway, here's the next one:

Lots of kitty litter, and that's a very subtle hint...

Shot in the dark - Northern Africa -- where there's lots of clay?

Matthew is on the right track, but I would like a bit more detailed answer ;)

Looks like northern Egypt, west of the Nile Delta. Was kitty litter partly a reference to the Great Sphinx? That with Matthew's North Africa comment led me that direction.

Still not sure what the landscape is, or why it's important. So maybe there's more detail that someone can drum up for a better answer.

I'm sorry guys, I've been too busy lately to keep an eye on this.

I'm going to accept Tangnar's answer, it's close enough and I hadn't even though of the Sphinx so bonus points for being clever :) The area is indeed west of the Nile Delta, quite a ways west, it's the Qattara Depression, one of the lowest points on earth and, during WW2, an impassable obstacle for tanks.
